Onondaga County Executive’s Biography
Joanne M. Mahoney

Elected in November 2007, Joanne M. Mahoney is the first woman to serve as Onondaga County Executive.

Growing up in Syracuse, Joanie Mahoney graduated from Corcoran High School, Syracuse University's School of Management and S.U.'s College of Law.

After spending time in private practice, County Executive Mahoney worked for five years as a criminal prosecutor in the District Attorney’s Office before being elected Councilor-at-Large in the City of Syracuse where she served a four year term.

In 2008 Joanie led Onondaga County to work toward a greener, more sustainable community culminating in “Save the Rain”, a comprehensive stormwater management plan developed to reduce pollution to Onondaga Lake.

County Executive Mahoney has also placed a tremendous emphasis on literacy and education guiding the County’s partnership with Say Yes to Education, which will increase graduation rates and make college a possibility for many students.

Joanie also makes diversifying county government and supporting minority and women owned businesses a priority. She established a partnership with On Point for College which provides summer jobs for college students.

Joanie understands the importance of the arts and successfully created a dedicated funding stream for arts organizations in our community.

In 2010, then Governor-Elect Andrew Cuomo asked County Executive Mahoney to serve as co-chair of his transition team. In 2012, Governor Cuomo appointed Joanie to serve as a Trustee for the New York Power Authority and most recently the Governor appointed her as Chair of the New York State Thruway Authority.

In November 2015, Joanie was elected to her third term as County Executive.

Joanie Mahoney and her husband Marc Overdyk have four sons and reside in the Town of Dewitt.
